The History of the Richfield Police Department Motorcycle Unit
Richfield Police Department received its first motorcycle from the Fred Babcock VFW post (Babcock was a Richfield officer killed in line of duty in 1949) in 1955. Bob Carstenbrock was the only officer riding at that time but he later trained in others. Richfield had a Harley until about 1977 when it was involved in an accident. In 1978 the department bought a Kawasaki that was a 1000 cc,. The department had that for several years until it was involved in an accident. In the early 2000s Richfield Police Department began leasing a Harley, and then decided to purchase one about 2007. Richfield Police Department now has three officers certified to ride.
