The History of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Motorcycle Unit

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office utilized motorcycles the 1960’ and 1970’s, but then parked them in the late 1970’s.  The DCSO still owns two 1972 Harley Davidson’s, both of which are now on display.  Like many departments across the county, DCSO was able to get a new Harley Davidson Road King in 2000 under a $1.00 per year lease.  While the cheap lease is certainly a thing of the past, the DCSO motor Unit has grown to four motors, now using HD FLHTPI’s completely outfitted with computers, radar, laser, PVP Bluetooth communications, and full light packages.

Our motor officers have all completed the Northwestern Police Motorcycle Operator Course, and train on a regular basis including a 40 hour Advanced Motor Officer Course.  Having been trained in escort procedures by Sgt Jeff Capps of the United Starts Park Police, our unit works closely with several other small motor units in the area to conduct numerous escorts every year including Presidential, Vice-Presidential, His Holiness the Dalia Lama, and others.    To make the most of our training opportunities, and to collaborate on various escort details, our local units have recently formed the Badger Motor Officer’s Association (www.badgermotorofficers.com). Each year, our unit along with others from our multi-jurisdictional unit, trailer our motors out to Washington DC to participate in COPS Survivor Escorts during National Police Week – while we all have to pay our own way, it is en experience worth every penny.
