The History of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Motorcycle Unit

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit has been in place since the late 1980’s and is still a specialty unit today. The Motor Unit has been through several changes as it relates to its motorcycles. From its inception until 1998, the Motor Unit utilized Kawasaki KZ1000 motorcycles. In 1998, the Motor Unit purchased its first set of BMW RT110PT motorcycles. From 1998 to 2008, the Motor Unit used the RT1100P, RT1150P and the RT1200P until February 2008, when we purchased our Harley-Davidson FLHPI. ACSO started utilizing hand-held stalker RADARS in the 1990’s and completely moved to the utilization of the LTI LASER with the DBC (Distance Between Cars) Module as the primary speed enforcement detection equipment. As well as traffic enforcement the ACSO Motor Unit is responsible to accident reconstruction with three fully certified Re-constructionists.
