Kentucky Highway Patrol was founded in 1936 when the Division of Highway Patrol was created as a part of the Kentucky State Highway Department
The Kentucky State Police began in 1936 when the Kentucky State Highway Department was created to include a Division of the Highway Patrol. The Highway Patrol employed 40 officers who regulated and enforced the traffic laws of Kentucky. By 1938, the force increased to 200 officers.
On July 1, 1948, the Kentucky State Police was formed after legislation was signed giving its officers full police powers, both traffic and criminal.
Since 1948, the Kentucky State Police continues to uphold tradition by serving and protecting the citizens of Kentucky. The agency prides itself on its reputation for courage, performance, integrity and professionalism.
