The History of the Ashwaubenon Police Department Motorcycle Unit
Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety had two Harley Davidson Police motorcycles in 1993. We currently still have two Harley Davidson Police FLHTPI Motorcycles. Both are all black with ABS. They are set up with Setcom push to talk radio systems using a Motorola, Astro radio. Both are fully equipped with Whelen lights and sirens. Both motorcycles have computers. One of the motorcycles has Harley Davidson front and rear moving/stationary radar.
As far as staff goes our unit has nine officers/supervisors who are certified to operate the motorcycles. All staff have been trained by Harley Davidson/Northwestern Center for Public Safety staff or trained instructors. I have been with the unit since 2002 when I was first certified to operate. In 2004 I went to Harley Davidson/Northwestern Center for Public Safety course held in Joliet, IL where I was certified as an instructor. Since 2005 we have conducted our own training for our department and other area departments.
We use our motorcycles on patrol from about May to November. They also work great for special events that we have in our area like Packer Games, marathons and escorts.
